That Boutique-y Advent Calendar 2020
James E Pepper 3 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish – Rye Whiskey – 50% vol.
On the 3rd day of Christmas Boutique-y gave to me…a little rye whiskey!!
I was sent this Boutique-y Whisky Company Advent Calendar in order to sample its delights, and to reveal my thoughts to you dear reader!! Will they all delight my palate? Time will certainly tell.
So, day 3 is from James E Pepper, and it’s rye whiskey and also an oloroso cask finish – 50% vol.
This is actually one that I first tried on a tasting last year, and it’s nice to have the opportunity to do so again. Sugar puffs (I’m sure it is those sticky things) and a lovely sweetness. A hint of coffee perhaps? The palate had a lot of warmth with the first sip, quite like a warming cough sweetie (if you get my drift?) cloves and warmth, it’s either that or rub a little something on your chest… there’s a nice bitterness to this too, some dark chocolate. But it’s sweet and caramelly too.
The finish is sweet and spicy and nicey…
I really quite liked this, going back to my first sips of rye whiskey back in 2016, I can’t say I was too taken with them…back then.
The label is “set in an old school soda float shop, smartly dressed distillery owner Amir is having his order taken. Against a backdrop of all kinds of sweet treats, he chooses from three barrel shaped soda fountains and for this time, he goes for an Oloroso”, say the good folks at That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Artwork as ever by the very talented Emily Chappell.
