Official notes: Puffing Billy Steam Vodka is unfiltered malted barley vodka named for the specially-commissioned Carterhead Still which plays a key role in its production.
First we pot-distil from locally-grown barley, then we re-distil the spirit in Puffing Billy to turn it into vodka. Regular filtration would strip away the character and texture of the barley, so instead the spirit vapours are steamed through charcoal inside the still itself rather than filtered as a liquid.
It’s the only vodka in the world made this way, and the result is brimful of character with an incredible creamy mouthfeel.
Puffing Billy Steam Vodka – Steam Smoothed. Never Filtered.”
I’ll be honest I’ve never been a vodka drinker. What I think that helped put me off vodka was being at a house party when I was 22… another girl there had basically drank a litre and a half of it, then she came headfirst down the stairs on her belly. So, perhaps that was / is something that contributed to it. Plus to me, any I had tried, well they lacked taste. Or lacked body. Two things I love.
So I tentatively opened and poured this sample…
Tropical fruits a plenty… a little lime. Sweet on the nose. Fresh. Vanillaryish sort of scent.
Palate is a little malty. Bitter. Sweetness comes, then it flattens on the palate. There’s a creamy texture however. I tried it with Diet Coke, the only mixer type thing I have to hand. Smoothness comes through, but it’s still not for me. Getting an oddish aftertaste of lime and sugar.
I’m sure vodka drinkers will thoroughly enjoy it though.
