A D Rattray Tweet Tasting

Wednesday September 11 saw a group of us all gather round for a tweet tasting with Steve Rush of the Whisky Wire and A D Rattray Whisky. We had a lovely tasting with them last year Trying a Few Drams from A D Rattray

I was lucky enough to meet some of the A D Rattray team the following Saturday. What a friendly welcoming group…just the way it should be!!

The Tasting

Cask Speyside – 10 year old – 46% abv

Light and quite a delicate floral nose, vanilla..soft spices, creamy caramel. Stewed apple. it’s a bit biscuity too, definitely a lovely freshness on the nose. On the palate, Mr Toms nuts (bar) a little vanilla again, zesty, still getting a little creaminess to this, a nice woody spice…a nip of pepper heat too.

Cask Orkney – 18 year old – 46% abv

The nose was light and lightly fruity… a slight salty air to it. The palate delivered a lovely sweetness with a smooth mouthfeel, caramel with a teeny pinch of salt. Peppery warmth.

Cask Islay – NAS – 46% abv

A very light smokiness to this, this is reminiscent of the scent on your clothes after sitting next to a camp fire. A slight hint of Savlon cream. It’s citrusy too… sweet and soft smoke. Quite fresh, a little zest. Fruity notes.

Cask Islay – Bourbon Edition – 59.5% abv

This had quite a full mouthfeel… never one to argue with that fruity and spicy too. I’m actually getting a little creamy fudge and smokiness. A delicious woody spice too! A little salt and some zestiness…

Cask Islay – Sherry Edition – 59.9% abv

Not so much smoke… soft dark sugar. Quite earthy and salty hints too. Fruity. Burnt sugar. On the palate, ooft! Well now, there’s some sweetness there, but it’s thick and covered in sticky dark sugar. Strong black tea. Spicy and ashy.. some dark chocolate too.

Many thanks to the team from A D Rattray and Steve Rush for the oppportunity to sample thses whiskies.
